Article Abstract:

The use of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco varies widely across the US, indicating that reductions in tobacco use are achievable goals. Data from surveys of Americans reveal that in 1997, 25% of men smoked and 21% of women smoked. However, cigarette use ranged from 13.7% of the population in Utah to 30.8% in Kentucky. Rates of smokeless tobacco use also varied, from 1.4% in Arizona to 8.8% in West Virginia. Tobacco taxes also varied, since annual sales of tobacco products ranged from 186.8 packs per capita in Kentucky to 49.1 packs per capita in Hawaii.

Article Abstract:

One-fourth of all Americans were smokers in 2001, according to data from the 2001 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Smoking percentages ranged from 31% of the residents of Kentucky to 13% of the residents of Utah. All other states fell somewhere in between. One of the objectives of Healthy People 2010 is to reduce the percentage of Americans who smoke to 12% or less.

Article Abstract:

The percentage of adults who smoke in the US ranges from 14% in Utah to 31% in Nevada. Only Utah and Puerto Rico have achieved the national health objective for 2000 of reducing the percentage of adults who smoke to 15% or less. The percentage of adults whose workplace had an official smoke-free policy ranged from 61.3% to 82.1%.
