Clinical Decision Rule to Identify Febrile Young Girls at Risk for Urinary Tract Infection
Article Abstract:
Researchers have developed a clinical decision rule to identify which young girls with a fever may have a urinary tract infection (UTI). Clinical decision rules are used to identify which patients have a high risk of a certain medical condition and therefore need some type of diagnostic test. These rules can save money because people at low risk would not be tested. In a study of 1,469 girls less than two years old who had a fever, a score of 2 or more on the rules would detect 95% of the girls with a UTI and eliminate 30% of unnecessary urine tests.

Prospective comparison of culture vs genome detection for diagnosis of enteroviral meningitis in childhood
Article Abstract:
A new assay may provide a useful means of diagnosing enteroviral meningitis in children. The new test obtains results more rapidly than culturing specimens, which could reduce unnecessary treatment and hospitalization. Of 90 children with possible meningitis, nine had positive enterovirus cultures from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), stool, or throat, of whom six had positive CSF cultures. The new assay detected enteroviral DNA in the CSF of seven of those nine children. The new assay missed one child whose culture was positive.
