Article Abstract:

A 63-year-old man with an enlarged spleen and a low blood cell count was diagnosed with mastocytosis. This diagnosis was not considered until he had a bone marrow biopsy because he had none of the usual symptoms of mastocytosis. Mastocytosis is characterized by the infiltration of mast cells into skin, bone marrow, liver, spleen, lymph nodes, and the gastrointestinal tract.

Article Abstract:

Symptomatic details of a true patient are presented to a skilled physician, who in turn responds and provides explanations to the reader. The case study underscores the necessity of painstakingly probing for infection in patients with rheumatic symptoms, prior to assigning systemic illness to a sudden eruption of the fundamental rheumatic disease.
