Storm over Orkney

Article Abstract:

Four community nurses have criticised the management of the Orkney child abuse allegations following the Clyde Report on social work practice. All were familiar with the families involved and resented the lack of consultation before the removal of nine children. Orkney health board provided little help in dealing with the resulting community problems. All believe the allegations were unfounded. However, Orkney chief administrative nursing officer, Harold Ferris has criticised their outspokenness and loss of objectivity. A multi-disciplinary course in child abuse has been established.

The milky way

Article Abstract:

Staff at Queen's Park Hospital in Blackburn, England, are anxious to reverse its trend in breast-feeding, which has fallen below the national average of 63%. Queen's Park is the first UK hospital to develop a joint training initiative, approved by the World Health Organization, to educate health visitors, midwives and nurses on breast feeding. This has resulted in a co-ordinated, evidence-based approach to encouraging mothers to breast-feed. The hospital also wishes to join the Baby Friendly Initiative, launched by international organizations to promote breast-feeding.
