Diagnosis and reporting of HIV and AIDS in states with integrated HIV and AIDS surveillance - United States, January 1994-June 1997
Article Abstract:
Although the incidence of AIDS and its mortality rates have been dropping, the number of newly diagnosed cases of HIV infection has not. Between Jan, 1994 and Jun, 1997, 72,905 US residents were diagnosed with HIV infection or AIDS. Newly diagnosed HIV infection represented 72% of the cases. Although cases of HIV infection dropped slightly in men, they increased in women. Hispanics also experienced an increase in the incidence of HIV infection and gay men accounted for 32% of the cases. Many minorities have characteristics that place them at risk for HIV, such as lack of education and intravenous drug use.

Smallpox surveillance - worldwide
Article Abstract:
Worldwide cooperation through the World Health Organization (WHO) led to the eradication of smallpox in 1977. Widespread vaccination and disease surveillance eliminated the disease entirely, although virus remains in storage in the US and the Russian Federation. The World Health Assembly recommends that all remaining stocks of the virus be destroyed in June 1999. The successful effort against smallpox establishes the tremendous value of WHO to promote worldwide public health.
