Article Abstract:
Nurses who worked during the second world war had to deal with civilians injured during bombing raids while working in buildings that were themselves targeted by the bombers. Many of the nurses recollect having to continue with their normal practice as calmly as possible despite their ordeals. Patients often found their relatives dead and homes destroyed after being discharged from hospital, but there was no professional counselling available. Some nurses were posted overseas and had to deal with severe war injuries. The recollections of second world war nurses are presented.
