Surviving "survivor syndrome."(attitudes of remaining employees after a staff reduction)(Editorial)

Article Abstract:

During stressful times of layoffs and downsizing activities managers can help remaining staff members cope and maintain a sense of control by dealing with the issues in an honest manner. During times of job insecurities employees often feel resentment, bitterness, or a lack of control. Open communication and demonstration of concern for workers can help improve morale and make for a less anxious work environment.

The ethics of managed care: toward a common vision

Article Abstract:

Medical professionals should develop a set of ethical values concerning managed care in keeping with the philosophy of community service behind health care. A shift in focus from finance to patient rights may help managed care and medical services move towards a more ethical approach to health care. Adherence to ethical guidelines will decrease patients' fear of managed care and enhance professional practice.

Mahatma Gandhi on organizational redesign

Article Abstract:

US hospitals have failed to achieve their goals in making organizational reforms because they have not acted upon the type of moral vision possessed by reformers such as Gandhi. Downsizing has inflicted pain without justifiable gain in the health care arena. US health care reformers should realize they cannot achieve their stated ends through brutal and immoral means.
