THE UNFOLDING OF AN AUDITORY ILLUSION
Article Abstract:
Research on directional hearing indicates that the pinnae, or fleshy outer ears, play an important role in auditory perception. Previously dismissed by Charles Darwin as vestigial structures, the pinnae are used to locate the origin of sounds. When the pinnae are occluded, directional perception deteriorates and auditory illusions are created.
