The ways in which compensation for taste and smell loss in the elderly can boost health and nutritional status are considered. Flavour enhancement of food for the elderly and sick people can have a positive effect on food palatability and acceptance.

Issues concerning sarcopenia, the loss of muscle mass and strength as a result of aging, are discussed. The importance of sarcopenia as an indicator of reduced protein stores for times of stress is considered.

Body weight and weight change and their health implications for the elderly

Standard anthropometric data do not accurately reflect changes in body composition and fat distribution with aging. It is likely that low lean body mass is better reflect by low boxy mass index.
