Testing times

Article Abstract:

Queen Mary's Hospital for Children, Carshalton, Surrey, England is using psychometric testing for redundancy selection. Twenty-two posts will be reduced to eight. The National Health Service commonly uses psychometrics for managerial appointments to establish inter-personal skills. The Royal College of Nursing endorses their appropriate use but has criticised St Mary's action. Psychometrics are useful in assessing strangers but existing staff should be treated more sensitively.

Rationing care?

Article Abstract:

The moral dilemmas associated with the rationing of health care in the NHS were discussed at a conference held in London, UK, in Jun 1992. While the need to ration health care because of limited financial resources is acknowledged, the basis on which to make decisions over which patients should be treated remains a major problem. The notion of treating patients using a low-tech approach as a means of releasing extra cash was also put forward at the conference.

License off?

Article Abstract:

Nursing Agencies have opposed the Institute of Director's (IoD) decision to abandon licensing. The IoD considers licensing an unnecessary restriction on competition. However, nurses regard it as an indication of good practice. It also safeguards nurses' salaries. Nursing agencies do not consider controlled profit margins restrictive. They fear deregulation will lead to a decline in standards of care.
