The Chemical Use, Abuse, and Dependence Scale (CUAD): rationale, reliability, and validity
Article Abstract:
The Chemical Use, Abuse, and Dependence Scale (CUAD) has been found to be a dependable and valid diagnostic instrument for determining the extent of substance abuse. CUAD uses a short, partly structured interview to evaluate subjects' drug abuse. This interview meets the diagnostic standards established in the American Psychiatric Assn's 'Diagnostic and Statistical Manual III Revised' while being far less time-consuming than earlier assessment methods such as the Addiction Severity Index. A study involving two test groups confirmed CUAD's accuracy.

Drug abuse in Cuba
Article Abstract:
Prescription drugs are the main substances used by addicts in Cuba. These are mostly barbiturates, amphetamine compounds, and drugs used to treat glaucoma and Parkinson's disease. The level of substance abuse in Cuba is difficult to ascertain as Cuban officials are prompt to deny that there are any substance abuse problems. Substance abuse is expected to remain on the uptrend in Cuba because of a weak economy and high unemployment and underemployment rates.
