The Future of Firearm Violence Prevention: Building on Success

Article Abstract:

Firearm-related violent incidents have declined since 1993 as law enforcement and other policy changes have reduced the availability of guns and increased the disincentives to use them. Increased police patrols in areas of high crime, and strong federal enforcement of gun laws, have suppressed some firearm crimes. Background checks for gun buyers, pressure on manufacturers to mitigate "straw" purchases, and tougher licensing requirements for dealers have contributed to reductions in gun violence.
