Comparing new participants of a mobile versus a pharmacy-based needle exchange program
Article Abstract:
Needle exchange programs need to operate in several different venues to attract the most drug addicts. In a study of 286 addicts who used a needle exchange service, African Americans were more likely to use a pharmacy-based service than one based in a mobile van.

The Natural History of Hepatitis C Virus Infection: Host, Viral, and Environmental Factors
Article Abstract:
Hepatitis C may be relatively benign in many people and may not cause serious liver damage. In a study of 919 people infected with the hepatitis C virus, 90 were able to clear the virus from the body completely. Another 722 still tested positive for the virus, but of 210 patients from this group who had a liver biopsy, only two had liver cirrhosis. Blacks and HIV patients were less likely to clear the virus. Only 40 cases of end-stage liver disease occurred over a 9-year follow-up.

HTLV-II and bacterial infections among injection drug users
Article Abstract:
HTLV-II does not appear to increase the risk of bacterial infections in intravenous drug addicts. Although this virus is found all over the world, doctors have been unable to link the virus to any specific disease.
