The "PRIM" study: A randomized comparison of prostaglandin E2 gel with the nitric oxide donor isosorbide mononitrate for cervical ripening before the induction of labor at term
Article Abstract:
An attempt is made to compare the efficacy and safety profile of prostaglandin E2 with isosorbide mononitrateis for cervical ripening before the induction of labor at term. Conclusions reveal that isosorbide mononitrate is less effective and maternal satisfaction is significantly greater and safety profile of each agent is reasonable to give isosorbide mononitrate, but not prostaglandin E2, on an outpatient basis.

Induction of labor at term using isosorbide mononitrate simultaneously with dinoprostone compared to dinoprostone treatment alone: A randomized, controlled trial
Article Abstract:
A randomized controlled trial is carried out to examine if isosorbide mononitrate (IMN) given along with dinoprostone in term pregnancies is in any way superior to dinoprostone given alone to promote delivery. It is proved that vaginally administered IMN given along with dinoprostone does not have any effect in promoting delivery in term pregnancies.

Vaginal application of the nitric oxide donor isosorbide mononitrate for preinduction cervical ripening: a randomized controlled trial to determine effects on maternal and fetal hemodynamics
Article Abstract:
Isosorbide mononitrate does not appear to be effective for ripening the cervix to induce labor. Cervical ripening is the medical term for the softening of the cervix that occurs during labor so it can expand and allow the baby to come out.
