The Prozac children: Magic bullet or dangerous quick fix?

Article Abstract:

There are about 400,000 children under the age of 18 in the US being treated with Prozac (fluoxetine), a drug normally prescribed to adults to help them cope with the stresses of modern life. The numbers are less in in the UK, although no exact figures are available from Eli Lilley, its manufacturer, or the Department of Health. It is not recommended for children under the age of 12 suffering from clinical depression, bulimia nervosa and obsessive compulsive disorder. There is a reluctance to prescribe antidepressants for adolescents and children, as their psychobiology varies from adults.

Flashback to my own baby killer nightmare

Article Abstract:

The case of Louise Woodward, the British au pair found guilty of the manslaughter of a nine-month-old child in the US, has revived painful memories for midwife Susan Alston. Her daughter Helen was eight months old when she was killed by her childminder in Oct 1993. The childminder was found guilty of manslaughter and was sentenced to four years in prison. The trial was extremely traumatic, as the childminder denied any responsibility.
