Between language and science: the question of directed mutation in molecular genetics

Article Abstract:

John Cairns' discovery that spontaneous mutations can be selected for in bactgeria has led to the emergence of a controversial debate regarding genetic mutation in the scientific community. However, closer analysis revealed that the conflict lies in difference of interpretation and judgment of experimental results. Herein lies the importance of language in description of scientific processes which, in turn, promotes the growth of scientific knowledge.

Genomic logic, allelic inference, and the functional classification of genes

Article Abstract:

Classifying genes according to function is more complicated than present models often indicate. In the case of mammalian genes necessary for host defense, the functional concepts of housekeeping and contingency are inadequate. The underlying evolutionary importance of developing reproductive fitness must always be considered in explaining the function of genes.
