The challenge of change

Article Abstract:

Community psychiatric nurses (CPNs) have been accused of withdrawing care from people with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, and focusing more on patients who are classed as neurotic. It is essential that CPN managers do not just pay lip service to priotization of services, but fight for a larger share of resources to meet the needs of all mentally ill patients and their carers. Moves must also be made to prevent qualified CPNs from leaving the field and entering management.

Pushed to the margin?

Article Abstract:

The vital role played by nurses in the care and treatment of AIDS patients was not discussed at the 1992 International Conference on AIDS, held in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The important work carried out by nurses in the areas of prevention, research and clinical trials was not recognized at the conference. A method of recording their research and efforts must be found, so that their role is recognized in the future.

Inspirational times

Article Abstract:

The positive approach of nurses working with limited resources in stressful situations is inspiring. For example mental health nurses have to cope with increasing problems caused by homelessness, poor social conditions and poverty. Many are responding to the challenge with innovative practices developed according to client needs.
