The comfort zone: understanding why we seek solace in comfort foods is the first step toward breaking the habit

Sweet, fat-based foods, such as chocolate, ice cream and cookies, and salt-based foods serve as ways to feel better psychologically. Unfortunately, they can help increase weight. One of the reasons people seek comfort foods is that they provide consolation without solving the problems that cause unhealthy eating indulgences. At the center of comfort food craving is doubt about self-worth. It is helpful to engage in a different activity when the craving is at its peak.

Many people feel a craving for a snack in the late afternoons. Sometimes this craving is based on true hunger, but sometimes it is psychological. Snacking can lead to weight gain, or at least prohibit weight loss, unless those who snack then eat less at meals. Suggestions for lower calorie snacks are offered.
