The future of IL-2 in HIV

Article Abstract:

The quality-of-life issue was discussed and in the ACTG 328 study, patients were randomized to receive highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) plus intermittent interleukin (IL) 2, by intravenous or subcutaneous routes. The subcutaneous administration of IL-2 showed a significant increase in quality of life over both intravenous delivery and HAART alone.

Interleukin-7 receptor expression on CD8 T-cells in downregulated by the HIV Tat Protein

Article Abstract:

The way in which HIV Tat protein downregulates cell surface expression of CD127 on human CD8 T-cells in a dose and time dependent manner is demonstrated. It is felt that Tat may play an important role in HIV-induced immune dysregulation and impaired cell-mediated immunity due to the apparent inhibition of cytotoxic activity by Tat.

Upregulation of interferon-[alpha] and RANTES in the cervix of HIV-1-seronegative women with high-risk behavior

Article Abstract:

A study distinguishes a relatively high expression of interferon-[alpha] (IFN[alpha]) and RANTES in HIV-1-infected versus low-risk control subjects. Induction of IFN[alpha] and RANTES expression in cervical mucosa could lead to protection of sexual HIV-1 transmission in subjects with a higher risk behavior.
