The impact of Project 2000

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to see how student nurses, health professionals and health service administrators felt about the nursing training programme, Project 2000. Students were given questionnaires as a means of collecting data on their feelings and perceptions about the course. Concerns were raised by the students about the quality of tuition and that some theory modules did not coincide with the related practical experience. Nurses praised the range of course material and the encouragement to question and analyse. Recommendations for developing Project 2000 are given.

Perceptions and practice of health education and health promotion in acute ward settings

Article Abstract:

A study has investigated nurses' incorporation of health education into nursing practice and influential factors. About 132 ward sisters participated in interviews. Six case-studies of good practice provided further information. Over half the respndents considered they were contributing to health education. However, problems of lack of time suggest they did not perceive it as integral to nursing care. Lack of knowledge also inhibited health promotion. Findings suggest future policy should address inhibiting factors to enable nurses to fulfill their potential.

Making the transition from student to staff nurse

Article Abstract:

In the UK, the aim of Project 2000 is to provide the health-care system with a flexible and skilled nursing sector. A study of a group of Project 2000 students making the transition from student to staff nurse seeks to discover how the process helped them adapt to changes in the health-care system. The findings show that the students were worried about facing increased responsibility and accountability and also encountered negative staff attitudes.
