The importance of practice
Article Abstract:
Many nurses feel that theoretical knowledge is more highly valued than clinical skills. Staff inadequacies limits student nurse skill assessment. Lack of funds limits post-registration practical courses. The academic emphasis of Project 2000 has further undermined clinical practice. Differential pay scales have contributed to the problem. A desire for professional status for nursing may have resulted in an emphasis on theory. However, the United Kingdom Council Central Council has recommended an advanced practice award for nurses.

Attitude problem
Article Abstract:
Exercises and discussion may help nurses overcome prejudiced and stereotypical misconceptions of elderly people. Elderly clients may receive inferior mental health care due to beliefs that deterioration is part of the normal ageing process. However, studies have shown elderly people respond well to cognitive and behavioural interventions. Sensitisation exercises aim to reveal how professional bias can affect care. Games through which nurses experience loss or sensory decline may create greater understanding.

Careless whispers
Article Abstract:
A nurse describes how the death of a patient and the ward Sister's uncaring attitude acted as a powerful learning experience. Angered at the attitude of the Sister towards the dead patient and her grieving partner, the writer believes that the most important role for a nurse is to be caring and sympathetic.
