Anesthesia and the surgical experience

Article Abstract:

Developments in the field of anesthesiology contributed greatly to the improvement of both surgical and clinical care and the reduction of mortality in surgical cases. This development took shape after 50 years of surgical experience and can be attributed to the dedicated efforts of pioneers such as Waters, Rovenstine, Lundy, and Wood, among others. High quality research and improved education must be utilized to preserve the accumulated gains in anesthesiology that are currently being threatened by the growing trend of health maintenance organizations.

The discovery of heparin revisited: the peptone connection

Article Abstract:

The discovery of heparin, a potent anticoagulant, was the result of the combined attempts of Adolf Schmidt-Muelheim, Giulio Fano, William H. Howell, Jay McLean, Armand Quick, Charles Best, J.E. Jorpes and Louis Jaques. Schmidt-Muelheim was among the investigators who described the anticoagulant effects of heparin by explaining the phenomenon of peptone shock. Thus, a reconstructive analysis reveals that the credit for discovering heparin goes to a group of scientists rather than to either Howell or McLean.
