The nursing management of dyspnoea in palliative care

Article Abstract:

The treatment of patients who have dyspnoea, that is difficult or painful breathing, should be carefully managed and consideration should be given to the patient's personal aims in addition to the status of the patients disease. A whole range of treatments are discussed, which are all holistic in perspective, for example by empowering the patient to relax themselves so that they can regain control of the symptoms. The patient should be provided with emotional and physical support, and the nurse should refer the patient to other areas of the medical services if necessary.

Issues for clinical leaders in nursing development units

Article Abstract:

Nursing development units (NDUs) were introduced to promote nursing, midwifery and health visting practice development. They encourage nurses to question accepted practice, and practice initiatives are driven by patients' needs. The clinical leader within an NDU provides support for the team and is required to have professional managerial and secretarial support. However there is a lack of knowledge regarding clinical leadership and a study looked at the effect of funding on effective leadership.
