The right staff to fit the bill

Article Abstract:

In the U.K., community care and the National Health Service are failing many old and vulnerable people who need care. One of the main problems is that their needs are often assessed inaccurately by professionals. In many cases, budgetary needs often override other considerations. A policy statement produced by the Royal College of Nursing, the British Geriatrics Society and the Association of Directors of Social Services calls for multidisciplinary assessment by properly trained nurses and health professionals.

Nursing home nurses need support to update skills

Article Abstract:

It is vital that nurses working in nurses homes in the UK continually update their skills, as the demands on the sector are constantly increasing as the number of beds in NHS continuing care units falls. Registered nurses are now obliged to undertake five days' study activity every three years to retain their registration, but many nurses working in nursing homes do not have access to appropriate training. It is vital that the government allocates additional funding for this function.

Labouring under an illusion

Article Abstract:

The UK government must develop a clear strategy for deciding who is entitled to nursing home care in their old age and how it should be funded. The National Health Service was designed to ensure all people were provided with health care when it was needed, although cutbacks by government has led to the elderly being denied treatment or having reduced levels of service. Health authorities are being asked to ensure the treatment given to the elderly is fairly and openly provided.
