Tips on giving and obtaining employment references

Article Abstract:

Physicians should avoid giving and receiving employment references based on subjective speculation since this practice might expose them to libel suits. However, employment law does permit the divulgence of information contained in written performance evaluations. In giving references, physicians should base information on documented actions. They should require employees to review their files upon termination and sign a consent-to-release form. Written references from other employers should not be taken at face value. Instead, the motives behind them should be probed.

How do you deal with others who are less than perfect?

Article Abstract:

A physician's unrealistic expectations of employees, contractors, partners and suppliers could lead to personnel and practice management problems such as poor office morale, poor job performance and high attrition rates. To attain success, the physician needs to develop realistic expectations of others by understanding others' perspectives and to relinquish some control. Needs and goals that are crucial to the success of the practice and the physician's personal success should be identified and protected.
