Tissue of progress

Article Abstract:

Significant developments in the history of organ transplantation are presented. Blood transfusion was the first major achievement in the 19th century. Experimentation in kidney transplantation began in 1901 with the first major success in 1954. The first pancreatic transplantation occurred in 1966 although combination with kidney transplantation was more successful. The first human liver transplant in 1963 failed but new techniques have improved the success rate since the mid 1970s. Further developments have encouraged small bowel, heart and lung transplantation and corneal grafting.

Neurological disease: a nurse as patient

Article Abstract:

A nurse describes the treatment she has been receiving for chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIPD). CIPD causes weakness in the hands, arms and legs, plus facial tremors. Cramp, nerve pain, tingling and burning are other symptoms. Treatment for CIPD includes plasma exchange plus immunosuppressive drug therapy using azathioprine. High doses of steroids are given daily but these can cause weight gain and mood changes. Immunoglobulin is also beneficial. Chemotherapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy are also helpful.
