'Tobacco-Free Kids' center gears up lobbying efforts

Article Abstract:

The Center for Tobacco-Free Kids, scheduled to open in Jun 1996, will serve as a clearinghouse for anti-tobacco groups. The organization is made possible by substantial grants from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Cancer Society. The group will conduct preventive and educational programs, provide assistance for community and state tobacco-control programs and serve as a focal point for lobbying efforts.

Abortion politics overshadow fight against teen pregnancy

Article Abstract:

The political burden associated with abortion threatens the appointment of Dr Henry W. Foster Jr. as surgeon general. A gynecologist and obstetrician and a leader in the fight to prevent teenage pregnancy, Foster set up a successful program at Meharry Medical College to help youth living in nearby public housing. However, critics object that contraceptives may be provided, although sexual abstinence is promoted.

Abortion rights leader and executive director of the National Coalition of Abortion Providers Ron Fitzsimmons is urging the movement to abandon 'half truths' in its fight to defend abortion rights. Fitzsimmons speaks specifically to advocates that down play the use of late-term abortion procedures with healthy mothers and narrow the focus of the debate to third-trimester abortions.
