Tobacco deal promising but not perfect

Article Abstract:

State attorneys general and cigarette manufacturers reached a $368.5 billion agreement on Jun 20, 1997. Public health organizations also want additional concessions from the industry. An American Medical Assn task force wants the agreement to include power for the Food and Drug Administration to control tobacco products as they control other drugs and to assess financial penalties against the tobacco industry for young smokers.

'Tobacco is on the run'; AMA joins in call to reopen hearings on addiction

Article Abstract:

Proponents of the anti-smoking movement are continuing to advance their cause in the wake of the Liggett Group tobacco settlement on Mar 20, 1997. The fifth largest tobacco company in the US, Liggett, acknowledged that nicotine is addictive, that tobacco companies market to young people and that smoking causes disease. Internal documents supporting these acknowledgements were also provided.

President pledges to keep pushing for national plan to curb teen tobacco use

Article Abstract:

Lack of consensus regarding tobacco industry liability is hampering President Clinton's efforts to create an anti-smoking policy targeting teenagers. Republicans have criticized Clinton's proposed policy, which they say fails to address the liability issue. Other policy elements include decreasing children's access to tobacco products and a per-pack tax increase.
