Transplant successes stir debate on coverage

Article Abstract:

As transplant operations move from being classified as experimental procedures to accepted ones, the issue of payment becomes important. As a result of the National Institutes of Health's "cautious approval" of liver transplant surgery, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts has set up TIP - its Transplant Insurance Plan - to cover subscribers for any liver, heart or heart-lung transplant for 5 days prior to surgery to 12 months after it. TIP costs 50 cents extra per month for individuals and 2 dollars per month for families.
