Mediators of Patient Trust

Article Abstract:

It is not clear whether the way physicians are paid affects their patients' trust in them. A 1998 survey of patients found that 84% trusted their physician to act in their best interest rather than the interest of the managed care organization. Physicians who were paid fee-for-service were more likely to have trusting patients. However, most patients did not know how their physician was paid. And patients in a fee-for-service plan can shop around for a physician they trust, making this finding subject to bias. Physicians' own feelings about managed care also may influence their patients' attitudes.

Low-Tech Autopsies in the Era of High-Tech Medicine: Continued Value for Quality Assurance and Patient Safety

Article Abstract:

The best way to raise the autopsy rate is to require a certain percentage of autopsies for Medicare reimbursement and hospital accreditation. Autopsies were traditionally done to accurately determine the cause of death, among other reasons. However, the autopsy rate as a percentage of deaths has dropped to less than 10% in many hospitals. This would be no problem if diagnostic tests performed while patients were alive were accurate. But studies have shown that one-third or more of the diagnoses made at autopsy were never suspected before the patient's death.
