Turnover among nursing home staff: a review

Article Abstract:

Employee turnover is a critical issue for nursing homes. A circular model of turnover suggests that the decision to leave is the result of person-job fit, the individual's response to the degree of fit, and environmental factors such as the job market. Person-job fit is determined by personal factors and work-related factors at the institutional, unit, and work-content levels. The model is circular to reflect the effect of turnover on remaining staff members. Some strategies for reducing turnover have been proposed, but research is needed to determine their effectiveness.

The Risks and Rewards of Contracting with Health Plans

Article Abstract:

Medicare + Choice will be available in the fall of 1998, and will significantly affect the nature of the Prospective Payment System crucial to postacute care providers. Medicare + Choice will allow recipients to choose between health maintenance organizations, provider-sponsored organizations, preferred provider organizations, and traditional fee-for-service care. Many postacute care providers are considering whether to offer only skilled nursing services rather than serving higher-acuity patients.

Nursing care plans; issues and solutions

Article Abstract:

Nursing care plans must not just satisfy accreditors but rather be vital to nurses' work. Plans should be short enough for acute care nurses to realistically do them and key nurses to recognize nursing diagnoses and collaborative problems. The plan should also facilitate timely data collection and be easy to update. An Insti-Care Plan meeting these criteria from the VA hospital in Fort Harrison, MO is described.
