Nucleated red blood cell count at birth as an index of perinatal brain damage
Article Abstract:
An elevated nucleated red blood cell count taken at birth can accurately predict which newborn babies have brain damage. Brain damage can be caused by low oxygen levels, and nucleated red blood cells appear to be the body's method of compensating for low oxygen levels.

Predictive value of fetal scalp blood lactate concentration and pH as markers of neurologic disability
Article Abstract:
Measuring the amount of lactic acid in fetal scalp blood appears to be more accurate than pH in detecting fetuses that may have low oxygen levels in the brain. This was the conclusion of a study of 1,709 pregnant women whose baby had an abnormal heart rate.
