Type-specific prevalence of genital human papillomaviruses in benign, premalignant, and malignant biopsies in patients from Greece

Article Abstract:

The different genetic forms of the human papillomavirus (HPV) identified in female Greek patients appear to be found in similar rates as those in other developed countries except for the HPV-18 type. Genetic typing was performed on HPV samples from Greek patients with either benign tumors, low- or high-grade pre-cancerous growths, or cervical cancer. Low-grade samples had 13% each of HPV-6, HPV-16, and HPV-18; 11% each of HPV-31 and HPV-33; and 2% each of HPV-53 and HPV-66. High-grade samples had 41% of HPV-16; 14% each of HPV-31 and HPV-33; 13% of HPV-18; and 4% of HPV-51.

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Human Herpesvirus 8 Infection in Northern Cameroon

Article Abstract:

Human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) is probably transmitted by sexual and non-sexual means. In a study of 292 people in Cameroon between the ages of 5 and 40, 40% of the children tested positive for HHV-8, 51% of the teenagers tested positive, and 64% of the adults tested positive. Adults with a history of a sexually transmitted disease were two times more likely to be infected with HHV-8. HHV-8 has been linked to Kaposi's sarcoma, a type of skin tumor.
