UKCC community plans under fire from COHSE
Article Abstract:
Patients' and clients' needs will not be met by the UKCC's community nursing proposals, according to a critical report by COHSE. A fully integrated service will not be achieved through the proposed creation of a 'community health-care nurse' and this move towards genericism is retrogressive. Other professional groups have unsuccessfully attempted to encompass generic workers and specialist staff are clearly required. The skills of existing employees who have no recorded qualification must be taken into account, with Project 2000 nurses being given an 'unfair bias.' The concepts of a modular community nursing education and a core curriculum are also queried.

Prisoner in Baghdad
Article Abstract:
Daphne Parish's book 'Prisoner in Baghdad' describes how she endured 10 months imprisonment in Iraq. She was arrested for spying with journalist Farzad Bazoft who was subsequently executed. Her sudden release proved as traumatic as her imprisonment. However, writing the book proved therapeutic. Her ordeal has heightened her awareness of the problems of ethnic minorities. She also belongs to the charity Prisoners Abroad. Since returning she has been largely unemployed but seeks to return to a nursing position in the Middle East.

Dissent down under
Article Abstract:
Australian nurses have taken industrial action over pay demands and poor working conditions during 1998, leading to diminished service cover in several states. The New South Wales Nurses' Association took the decision to strike after the government failed to award them a comprehensive payment package. The strikes reflect the strong level of emotion running through nursing in Australia. UK nurses are being encouraged to try working in Australia due to a shortage of specialist staff.
