Under surveillance

Article Abstract:

Hairmyres and Stonehouse Hospitals NHS Trust in East Kibride appointed a clinical audit sister to undertake surveillance of wound infection. The aim is to produce monthly infection rates as an effective way of reviewing surgical practice and reducing infection rates. The surveillance included individual risk assessments for each patients, and post operative surveillance at special wound clinics. It has led to more accurate information on wound infections, and a significant decrease in the clean wound infection rate.

Consistency counts

Article Abstract:

A study of the quality of information taken from a surveillance system on Hickman catheters has revealed that the existing method is inadequate for monitoring rates of infection and also compliance by ward-based nurses. It is suggested that information tends to be more accurate when only one nurse collected the information, as opposed to several. It is also suggested that infection control link nurses (ICLN) are the most appropriate nurse to carry out the surveillance.

The use of computer systems to monitor outbreaks of infection offers a variety of advantages including: comprehensive storage of infection data; improved analysis; improved identification of risk patients; improved efficiency and productivity; and the possibility of service expansion and support of audit programmes. The use of such systems is also quicker and more accurate.
