Union combats substance abuse

Article Abstract:

The Menbership Assistance Program (MAP) was organized by the Laborers' International Union of North America to fight substance abuse among workers. The program stresses early recognition of the problem and has features that distinguish it from management conducted programs. The fact that it is labor-initiated encourages self-referral. Quality treatment is ensured and the whole workplace is covered. The success of the MAP is due to the benefits it generates for the whole company. The program may soon be implemented nationwide.
