Article Abstract:

Research shows that the levels of a subunit of alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazol propionate glutamate receptors in the nucleus accumbens undergo changes during drug usage and drug withdrawal phases. Data indicate that in addition to the effect of drugs on the brain's reward circuitry, frustration of not taking it when they are anticipated can also affect the reward circuits.

Neurobiological research on drug addiction is presented, focusing on how addiction is associated with neural and behavioral plasticity. DNA microarray analysis is used to study how chronic cocaine exposure is linked with a cyclin-dependent kinase that changes striatal dopamine-receptor signaling.
