Update: Influenza Activity--United States and Worldwide, 2000-01 Season, and Composition of the 2001-02 Influenza Vaccine
Article Abstract:
Influenza activity was relatively mild in the winter of 2000-2001, primarily because the predominant viruses were the influenza A (H1N1) and influenza B viruses. These viruses cause less severe influenza than the influenza A (H3N2) viruses, which had been the predominant viruses since 1995. The 2001-02 influenza vaccine for the US will contain A/New Caledonia/20-99-like (H1N1), A/Moscow/10/99-like (H3N2), and B/Sichuan/379/99-like viruses.

Update: Influenza Activity--United States and Worldwide, 1998-99 Season, and Composition of the 1999-2000 Influenza Vaccine
Article Abstract:
Influenza cases began to increase in mid-January 1999 and peaked between February 6 and February 27. Influenza A(H3N2) was the most common virus, but influenza type B viruses also circulated widely. Beginning the week ending January 30, the percentage of deaths caused by pneumonia and influenza exceeded the epidemic threshold for 12 consecutive weeks in all 122 U.S. cities that reported influenza statistics. Ninety percent of the 327 A(H3N2) isolates collected in the US between October 4 and May 1 were similar to the 1998-99 A(H3N2) vaccine strain. The 1999-2000 influenza vaccine for the US will contain AlSydney/5/97-like (H3N2), A/Beijing/262/95-like(H1N1), and B/Beijing/184/93-like viruses.
