Update: detection of West Nile virus in blood donations -- United States, 2003
Article Abstract:
Over two million units of donated blood in the US were tested for West Nile virus between June and September, 2003, and 601 units were found to be positive. Two case reports illustrate the continuing transmission of West Nile virus by blood transfusion. However, this risk will decrease as more US blood centers use the West Nile virus test to screen donated blood.
