Urogenital aging - a hidden problem

Article Abstract:

About one-third of women over the age of 50 will develop disorders of the urinary and genital tract due to urogenital aging. Aging of the urinary tract can cause incontinence and recurring urinary tract infections. Disorders of neuromuscular function can also lead to incontinence. Aging of the vagina can cause dryness and itching, pain during sexual intercourse and bacterial infections of the vagina. The pH of the vagina changes as the woman ages, and a different mix of bacteria is found, some of them pathogenic. Some of these problems can be solved by taking estrogen.

Neuropathic injury to the levator ani occurs in 1 in 4 primiparous women

Article Abstract:

Levator ani neuromuscular injury is measured before and after the first delivery of women to identify the location, timing and mechanism of injury. Results suggest that approximately one in four pirimparous women has a detectable neuropathic levator ani injury, and women who have spontaneous vaginal delivery (SVD) appear to have a greater frequency of injury to the lateral levator sites, that is, puborectalis muscle.
