Uterine artery blood flow velocity waveforms in pregnant women with mullerian duct anomaly: a biologic model for uteroplacental insufficiency
Article Abstract:
Women with mullerian duct anomaly may have poor pregnancy outcomes because the fetus does not receive enough blood from the placenta. Mullerian duct anomaly is a birth defect caused by incomplete fusion of the two halves of the uterus in the early embryo. Researchers used ultrasound to measure blood flow in the uterine arteries of 30 healthy pregnant women and 15 pregnant women with mullerian duct anomaly. Women with the anomaly had different blood flow values in the two uterine arteries whereas healthy women did not. This indicates that one of the arteries is not functioning properly. Women with the anomaly were much more likely to have a poor perinatal outcome.

Discordant uterine artery velocity waveforms as a predictor of subsequent miscarriage in early viable pregnancies
Article Abstract:
Abnormal blood flow to the uterus may explain some cases of miscarriage. Researchers used ultrasound to measure the pulsatility index in both the right and left uterine arteries of 318 pregnant women. The pulsatility index is a way of measuring blood flow to the uterus. Eight percent of the women subsequently suffered a miscarriage. Women with a history of miscarriage and those with abnormal blood flow in the uterine arteries were three times more likely to suffer a miscarriage.

Screening test for preeclampsia through assessment of uteroplacental blood flow and biochemical markers of oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction
Article Abstract:
A study evaluated whether screening through a uterine artery Doppler and biochemical markers of oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction predict preeclampsia. Results demonstrates the early changes in markers of impaired placentation, antiangiogenic state, oxidative stress, and endothelial dysfunction suggesting that these derangements might play a role in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia.
