Viral load and CD4 count dynamics after HIV-1 seroconversion in homosexual and bisexual men in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to describe the virologic and immunologic events following seroconversion among homosexual and bisexual men in Rio de Janeiro and to compare the viral load and CD4 counts with those of persons infected in other parts of the world. It was found that the absolute CD[4.sup.plus] cell counts for Brazilian seroconverters were lower than those reported from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS) cohort at comparable time points.

The role of bathhouses and sex clubs in HIV transmission: Findings from a mathematic model

Article Abstract:

The Bernoulli process model is used to study the role of bathhouses and sex clubs in HIV transmission. The results of the model have indicated that given the characteristics of the MSM (men who have sex with men) population of the survey cities and the assumption that these characteristics do not change, bathhouse closure would result in an increase in the HIV attack rate.

Is the time from HIV seroconversion a determinant of the risk of AIDS after adjustment for updated CD4 cell counts?

Article Abstract:

This research group report found that the elapsed time between HIV seroconversion and certain CD4 counts (<500 cells/mm3, <350, <200) had a significant relationship to the risk of developing AIDS-defined symptoms. However, in practical terms, there is very little benefit to be had from knowing the length of time since seroconversion.
