Discovering new memories in psychotherapy - childhood revisited, fantasy, or both?
Article Abstract:
Scientific evidence has not convincingly proven the reliability of unverified memories of childhood trauma uncovered in psychotherapy. Much of psychotherapy is based on the uncovering of painful memories which have been repressed or dissociated. Work with post-traumatic stress disorder and multiple personality patients and the feminist movement have supported theories of memory repression and dissociation. While uncovering accurate or inaccurate memories may be beneficial in psychotherapy, it may not be beneficial when inaccurate memories lead to accusations in families and courts. Theories of dissociation and repression have not been proven by compelling research. Thus therapists who support and use these theories should be cautious. Childhood abuse is extremely common and the victims often hide or do not speak about their abuse. However, adult therapy patients encouraged to describe abuse that they never before remembered are not necessarily survivors of abuse.
