Wafaa El-Sadr
Article Abstract:
Wafaa El-Sadr, the Egyptian-born director of Columbia University's Center for Infectious Disease Epidemiologic Research, launched family-centered models for HIV and tuberculosis (TB) care. She was one of the first persons to push community partnership in clinical trials and integrate care for HIV and tuberculosis (TB). She has led a landmark trial with participants from 33 countries (SMART), which has disclosed that the drug-holidays, where those on AIDS drugs periodically stop taking the medications, have increased the risks of opportunistic infections and death.
