Waste away: more care in the community means more clinical waste in people's homes, but disposal is an increasing source of controversy and confusion for nurses
Article Abstract:
There is increasing clinical waste in the community due to faster patient throughput, home based treatment of patients and day case surgery. European Community directives state that some waste should be burnt, some placed in landfill sites and some is suitable to be left out with the domestic rubbish. The Health and Safety Executive in the UK calls for all waste to be taken away by the professional generating it, and there is a call for national guidelines.

Life-giving Fatwa
Article Abstract:
The Muslim Law Council has issued a fatwa, or religious opinion, saying that Muslims may carry donor cards and donate organs. Previously, many Muslims refused to sign an organ donor card or give permission for organ donations, saying that the body is the property of God. This fatwa has been welcomed by organ transplant coordinators, as the British Asian population has a higher rate of kidney failure, compared to the white British population.

Thrombosis link to pill gives women 'unnecessary anxiety.'
Article Abstract:
Many women in the UK have been caused unnecessary anxiety by the recent publication by the department of health of a warning that certain brands of contraceptive pill could double the risk of thrombosis, according to the RCN Practice Nurse Association. Nurses are angry that they were not warned in advance, as this would have allowed them to deal in a much more informed way with the fears of the many women who have contacted practice nurses.
