Weapon involvement in home invasion crimes

Article Abstract:

Firearms appear to be used rarely in protecting homes from intruders. Of 198 cases of home trespass in Atlanta, GA, recorded by the police department between June 1, 1994, and Aug 31, 1994, one-half were forced entries. The intruder left without encountering the resident in 42% of the cases. The intruder carried a gun in 17% of the cases. In 20%, at least one resident was injured by being cut, shot or stabbed. Only three residents, or 1.5%, used a firearm against the intruder; none of them were injured, but property was taken from one. No one died. Victims who resisted intruders were slightly more likely to be injured, but less likely to robbed. Stealth was used most often to gain access to a home and forceful entry was second. Home intrusion crimes occurred after midnight and before 6 a.m. in 47% of cases.

Relationship of hearing impairment to dementia and cognitive dysfunction in older adults

Article Abstract:

The prevalence of hearing loss among sufferers of Alzheimer's type dementia compared to similar-aged people suggests that hearing impairment contributes to cognitive dysfunction in older adults. One hundred older people with Alzheimer's, a mental disorder characterized by loss of intellecutal abilities and memory, were matched with the same number of age-, sex-, and education-matched normal subjects to study the theory. Not only did the hypothesis hold up, but the degree of hearing loss directly related to the severity of cognitive dysfunction, as measured by the Mini-Mental State Examination, in non-demented as well as demented patients.
