Indicator for All Seasons
Article Abstract:
The 'January Indicator' holds that if the Dow Jones Average changes in January, the end of the year average will be above or below that point. The average began the year at 1258.63 and closed the month at 1220.58. This theory would lead us to expect that the market will close the year at some level below 1220.58. To test this theory, previous January results were looked at. Over fourteen years it was found that January correctly predicted the market ten times. The results are shown in an accompanying table. Indicators were also formed for other months, with April being the most correct.
