Women at work

Article Abstract:

Some female nurses continue to be unwilling to involve themselves in male urinary catheterization procedures. This reluctance creates lower standards of care for male patients, and may mean that patients in the community have to wait and travel to see a male doctor to perform the simple procedure of changing a catheter. Teaching the patient to perform this function themselves may be one answer to this problem. The fears of female nurses relate to potential problems which include phimosis and resistance in the external sphincter. Guidelines for addressing these problems are included.

Men only

Article Abstract:

Male catheterisation is a routine procedure that may be performed by female and male nurses. However, many health authorities' policies have resulted in general lack of expertise. Some consider the task inappropriate for female nurses while others consider it an extended role responsibility. A study has shown that catheter complications often result in hospital admission due to inadequate community services. Patient care would improve with removal of limitations on practice.

Comprehensive care to order

Article Abstract:

Continence advisers have a wide remit and are not solely concerned with supplying aids. The main function of advisers is to provide education for fellow professionals, patients and their carers. Health care purchasers should make sure that they provide a comprehensive and high quality continence service to all their clients.
