Working for the good life in rural west Somerset

Article Abstract:

A project aimed at raising health awareness in a rural location in west Somerset, England, and helping to empower the local community to address these issues is described by the development worker for the project. The project covered around 9,000 people, 3,000 of whom lived in a small town. Isolation and low levels of physical activity emerged as major problems affecting all age groups. An after-school club was established to fight isolation as well as enable mothers to work, and a series of workshops were run as part of a Healthy Heart campaign aimed at reducing high rates of heart disease.

Redesigning the RN and NA roles

Article Abstract:

A surgical nursing department's efforts at expanding the roles of nursing assistants (NAs) appear to have been beneficial for the department's registered nurses (RNs), the NAs, the patients, and the profit margin. NAs received additional training for doing tasks identified by the senior nursing staff. The shift in responsibilities permitted RNs to have more time to do more highly skilled tasks, resulted in a decreased need for overtime, and encouraged a collaborative atmosphere.

Working with numbers

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom Audit Commission has revealed an unsystematic approach to community health service staffing. A report of Department of Health sponsored research 'Nursing by Numbers' has suggested criteria for consideration. Staffing levels should reflect local community nursing needs. Definition of district nurse and health visitor roles is necessary. Outcomes should be monitored. However, further research is necessary into achieving the right skill mix.
