Would you like to use one condom or two?
Article Abstract:
Using leading questions may give prostitutes a psychological edge when proposing single or even multiple condom use to their clients. Prostitutes asking how many condoms to use or what type of condom to use may be more successful than when asking whether to use a condom. This tactic appears to have been successful in reducing the condom breakage rate among Thai prostitutes and may have contributed to the overall reduction in the sexually transmitted disease rate in Thailand. Even though the estimated decrease in condom breakage when using multiple condoms is on the order of 1.6%, the perceived protection may be great.

Multiple condom use in commercial sex in Lamphun province, Thailand: a community-generated STD/HIV prevention strategy
Article Abstract:
Many prostitutes in Thailand appear to have independently initiated a policy of using multiple condoms simultaneously during sexual encounters in order to reduce their disease risk further. Sixty-seven Thai prostitutes identified as occasionally using multiple condoms were interviewed about condom use during their sexual encounters. The prostitute made most decisions about using single or multiple condoms. Most prostitutes indicated that using multiple condoms was a strategy to reduce risk for sexually transmitted diseases or HIV infection. Older clients were more likely to use multiple condoms than younger clients.

Predictors of Female Condom Use Among Women Exchanging Street Sex in New York City
Article Abstract:
Many prostitutes will use the female condom if they are taught how to use it. In a study of 113 prostitutes who were given a demonstration and 10 free female condoms each, many were able to use the condoms successfully. Homelessness was one factor associated with female condom use. Women who lived with someone with a drug or alcohol problem were also more likely to use the female condom.
